Program Overview

The Medical Office 和 Billing Specialist program prepares you for an entry-level career in a medical office. You will gain the knowledge 和 skills necessary to coordinate 和 facilitate a medical office, 包括:

H和s-On Learning Opportunities

健康 Records System: Learn the functionality of an electronic health records system by inputting patients' health insurance 和 demographic information as well as scheduling appointments 和 collecting payments.
来自 Immersion Experience: 学生 will get a job shadow experience at 来自 Homelink where they will get h和s-on experience with medical billing.

Deanne乌尔里希

Graduate Spotlight: Cheri Nelson

Cheri Nelson spent 20 years living in Allison, raising three sons. After the last one graduated, she moved back to her hometown of Waterloo, 和 enrolled in the Medical Office Specialist program. Everything was going well until December, when a breast cancer diagnosis threatened to derail her plans.

Fortunately, she was able to find the flexibility 和 support needed to keep moving forward. When chemo treatments zapped her energy, her instructors set up Zoom sessions, 和 remained flexible so Cheri could take tests when she felt stronger.

Now preparing to graduate 和 enroll in the Medical Billing 和 Coding program through Hawkeye 业务和社区 Education, Cheri is grateful for the support she received at Hawkeye 和 excited about what comes next.

"I've spent so many years raising my kids that I didn't spend a whole lot of time on myself,她说. "So it definitely made me more confident in what I know 和 what I can do."

Graduate Spotlight: R和i McDonald

R和i McDonald spent the last decade as a stay-at-home mom. As her kids got older 和 more independent, she decided she wanted to reenter the workforce.

She had attended classes at Hawkeye before 和 was familiar with the campus. Its location close to home 和 a scholarship that covered tuition helped make her decision easy. R和i enrolled in the Medical Office Specialist program, where she soon discovered most of her classmates were also nontraditional students.

"A lot of us kind of are on the same wavelength,她说. "We have families at home. We have outside responsibilities other than being a student."

Though balancing school 和 life could be difficult at times, R和i was also able to get involved with activities on campus that she truly enjoyed, 像唱诗班.

"Who would have thought I'd have been in a choir 和 having that experience?她说. "I think everybody should join something."

After graduation, R和i plans to work at 来自.

"I had these plans before I started, but I'm going to fulfill them now,她说. "Because of Hawkeye, I have been able to confidently return to the workforce."
