WASHINGTON, D.C.—Hawkeye Community College instructor Korianne Gevaert has been named a 2024 Adult Education State Advocacy Fellow by the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE).

The fellowship focuses on the development of grassroots, state level, and national leadership, engaging participants in impactful advocacy building exercises. The purpose of this fellowship is to build a robust network of leaders and advocates focused on the advancement of adult education across the country.

During the year-long fellowship, fellows will engage in national and regional policy discussions and join a growing number of peers dedicated to raising visibility and funding for the field.

“This program has proven incredibly successful since the launch of cohort 1 in 2020”, said Sharon Bonney, COABE's chief executive officer. Bonney cited the numerous metrics and outstanding accomplishments of the Fellowship.

Gevaert is the high school completion coordinator at Hawkeye Community College. She has a master’s degree in mathematics and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics education. She has been working in the education field for 12 years, and this is her eighth year working with adult students. She previously taught HiSET mathematics for six years and has worked as the coordinator for her program for the past two years.

“I am thrilled for the 2024 fellows as they spend the next year learning how to become better advocates for adult education across the country and better leaders, with the ultimate goal of providing the best adult education systems for our students,” says Jeffrey Abramowitz, chair of the fellowship program. “We are mindful that legislators do not make policy, the stories of our students and our teachers do.”
